Obstruction of Eustachian Tube Treated with Eustachian Balloon Tuboplasty Method

Being unable to fly due to otalgia and suffering from significant reduction in quality of life due to severe pain and sensation of pressure, Ms. Ayşe Güler  was treated with Eustachian Balloon Tuboplasty which is a relatively novel procedure in our country. Our patient recovered her health and she was discharged after a 20-minute operation performed by our Otorhinolaryngologist Assist. Prof. Emre Günbey, M. D.

Living in Istanbul, 52 years old Ms. Ayşe Güler presented to our hospital with complaints of severe pain and pressure sensation in ear that occurred after a flight and persist for a year. Taking various medicines that did not help the complaints for 1 year, Ms. Ayşe Güler was diagnosed with Obstruction of Eustachian tube by our Otorhinolaryngologist Assist. Prof. Emre Günbey, M. D., in the light of investigations. Our patient recovered her health with ‘’Bilateral Eustachian Balloon Tuboplasty’’ performed by Assist. Prof. Emre Günbey, M. D., and his team.

‘’Obstruction of Eustachian tube may cause loss of hearing in the long term.’’
Making a postoperative disclosure, Assist. Prof. Emre Günbey, M. D., informs about the obstruction of Eustachian tube occurring especially in people who flies regularly, amateur or professional divers and flight attendants: ‘’Eustachian tube acts to balance the middle ear pressure and the atmospheric pressure. Eustachian dysfunction is more common in environments characterized with quick changes in the external pressure, such as flights, and it leads to complaints of congestion and sensation of pressure in ear, otalgia, crunching noise in ear and obstruction. These complaints can, sometimes, occur in normal circumstances due to stenosis of the Eustachian tube. When left untreated, the long-standing Eustachian tube disorders may cause serious problems such as middle ear infection, collapse of the tympanic membrane and hearing loss.

A procedure increasing the quality of life: Eustachian Balloon Tuboplasty
Stating that there was no permanent or efficient treatment for the obstruction of Eustachian tube for many years, Assist. Prof. Emre Günbey, M.D. emphasizes that Eustachian Balloon Tuboplasty, which is performed in our country for 2 years now, increase the quality of life. Günbey adds ‘’This method was first performed in the United States of America in 2010 and it is relatively a novel technique in our country. Before this technique was discovered, patients with obstruction in Eustachian tube were generally treated with ear tube placement. Patients with an ear tube required restricted contact with water (such as swimming in sea or pool) and they were experiencing congestion in ears even while taking a shower. After Eustachian Balloon Tuboplasty, patients experience no problem related to water contact and they can easily prefer flights.’’

A Safe and Pain-free Method with A Success Rate of 85 Percent
Stating that Eustachian Balloon Tuboplasty method is extremely safe and comfortable, Assist. Prof. Emre Günbey, M. D. also informed on the details of the procedure: ‘’The procedure is fully laparoscopic and performed without any incisions or requirement of pack. To dilate the Eustachian tube, the balloon makes the catheter advance through the Eustachian tube by endoscopic approach with the help of catheter. Next, the balloon is inflated for 2 minutes and expands the stenotic segment of the tube. The patient can be discharged at the same day after this procedure and symptoms begin regressing in a short interval, such as one month.’’ Assist. Prof. Emre Günbey, M. D. added that the procedure can be performed on children after the age of 5 years, and this treatment provides permanent results.
